Happy Birthday Kate Moss!

I think this quote from the artist Marc Quinn really sums up what it is about Kate Moss that has made her such a successful model and a style icon...

"Her image is elusive, and you can never fix it.  Even if you make it in solid gold, another image will appear.  If you think you've taken the definitive photograph, you never have.  It's a special quality, which means she continues to carry on and gets more and more mythical.  It's the mystery of the Sphinx.

A few of my favorite Kate Moss looks:

This is probably a vintage dress but worn with a short slip - looks so amazing and Manolo Blahnik white Mary Janes...  Kate Moss loves vintage and it is just another reason to love her : )

A vintage leopard coat, a vintage creme brûlée colored chiffon dress, a Chanel bag and nails painted a dark red with moons left bare...

Kate Moss, British Vogue and the John Galliano Camiknicker

camiknicker
noun
a piece of women's underwear consisting of a light top to cover the upper body, connected to a pair of knickers
Cambridge Dictionary

Camiknicker is such a great word don't you think?  I don't think you would be able to go into the lovely new lingerie department at Barneys (one of the few new departments I actually like that Barneys renovated...) and ask for a camiknicker.  But at RARE vintage, you could go in and say, "I saw the most beautiful John Galliano camiknicker in the December British Vogue on Kate Moss with John Galliano, would you happen to have that one??"  And the answer you would hear would be, "Why yes, we have that exact one!"

Early John Galliano silk camiknicker as seen on Kate Moss in British Vogue

You can see in these detail photos just how exquisite this piece is - all of the hand work and the different silks.  Really beautiful and romantic...  I LOVE these early Galliano pieces...

RARE vintage, we've got your knickers covered : ))

Kate Moss in RARE vintage in the December British Vogue!

"Tomorrow she packs, her hopes as fragile as an early morning dew drop in that ethereal light you only see in St. Petersburg on a white night.  I want to weep when I see Miss Moss in character..."
John Galliano, British Vogue, December 2013

Fashion is a place, a journey, a mystery, a longing... Fashion is for dreamers, for lovers... Fashion is a buttonhole, a pink ostrich plume, a cut on the bias, a piece of origami cut in cloth, it is Glory, it is Demise... Fashion is feeding your chickens in a satin Balmain gown, a faded, crumbling farmhouse in East Hampton, a palace in St. Petersburg, a painting by Ingres ...  Fashion is grand.  Fashion is folly...

I wanted to cry with joy when I saw Kate Moss wearing an early John Galliano silk teddy, brilliantly pieced together, and an oversized origami kimono from John Galliano for Dior from RARE vintage in the December issue of British Vogue this morning.  RARE vintage!  My collection!!  In Vogue!!!  On Kate Moss!!!!  With John Galliano!!!!!

I was married in John Galliano for Givenchy.  I did not know that I ever really wanted to get married but being a girl and unable to escape girlish thoughts of wedding dresses, the one thing I did know, if I were to be married, I would wear John Galliano and Manolo Blahnik shoes.  It is funny how life works out: we did decide to get married, I did wear John Galliano and my shoes were Manolo Blahnik.

One of the reasons I was drawn to fashion, was the romance of it all, the feeling that you could be anyone, go anywhere.  Tolstoy's Anna Karenina in a black gown trimmed in Venetian guipure lace?  Why not?  Or a 70s rock chick in cut off jean shorts and a mongolian lamb vest?  Why not?

So not only do I love the photos of Miss Moss wearing pieces from RARE vintage (hello!  let me just say that again: Miss Moss wearing pieces from RARE vintage : )) with Mr. Galliano but I adore what Galliano wrote.  Below is an excerpt and you can read the complete article in the December British Vogue.

"I tell her a little story about Olga Khokhlova, Picasso's first wife and a magnetic and powerful force.  Visions of her playing Russian roulette with a dining knife, blithely stabbing away with staccato speed in between her fingers while gazing away.  She tilts her head backwards to a degree she feels and knows so well, every muscle held within that beautiful frame is working, projecting, living, feeling and breathing Olga.  She is Olga.  My Olga."

The Beautiful Bride: Malgosia Bela in RARE vintage!

Malgoisa Bela was married to Jean-Yves Le Fur on Li Galli this past weekend in a white Azzedine Alaia dress from RARE vintage and she looked absolutely stunning!  Her wedding epitomized the glamour of barefoot and bohemian chic in a beautiful setting.  She also wore a flowing lime colored Yves Saint Laurent caftan dress the following day (also from RARE vintage : ) with natural barely there makeup and her hair in soft waves.  So gorgeous!  Congratulations Malgosia!

Just Can't Go There: Fendi Fall 2013

The Fall 2013 ad campaigns are just starting to drop in the September issues - and I, who can pretty much embrace and wear anything, saw something in the September issue of Vanity Fair that even I thought was too fugly.

Somehow the Celine Spring 2013 mink Birkenstocks worked in some sick solace of supreme comfiness - and, silly me, thought that they would surely make it to sale, only to bitterly discover that like minded fashionistas had already snapped up said mink Celine Birkenstocks (much to the relief of my husband).

And speaking of Birkenstocks - which are suddenly popping up on everyone's must have summer essentials list - even rather unexpectedly the ladies of Vogue.  Don't you love this photo of Kate Moss back in her Corrine Day waif days in white Birkenstocks - and I think white is the only way to go... maybe red...  How about you?  Could you wear those Fendi mink sunglasses?  Birkenstocks?  The last and only other time I wore Birkenstocks was when I nearing the end of my pregnancy with twins and truth be told, they were awfully comfy... and a little fugly.

At Versailles with Dior, Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin

Beautiful new film shot by Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin for Christian Dior at Versailles with a soundtrack by Depeche Mode.  It really does not get any better: fashion and fantasy.  Enjoy!

And PS if you never saw Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin's little film with Kate Moss, see here, it is brilliant!

Loving This!

Nowness posted an animated video of Kate Moss from the set of the fall 2011 Balmain ad campaign.  The photographers Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin secretly installed four surveillance-style cameras to capture Moss's performance on set and then layered over the video, animation by the artist Jo Ratcliffe.  The result is "half horror film, half Disney".

I love it.  Enjoy!

Toujours L' Amour: Yves Saint Laurent

Here is what a big belt (really big!) can do for a LBD:
Anna dello Russo in Francesco Scognamiglio

Here is how a belt can define the waist:
 Kate Moss in Azzedine Alaia

Here is what a little imagination and a bit of rope can do for your outfit:
Giovanna Battaglia in ?? some rope?  Doesn't Giovanna always look amazing?

Those are just three examples of why a great belt is a great accessory and can transform an outfit into something very personal.  I love buying belts for RARE because they are the little item that makes a big impact.

Here are four belts from Yves Saint Laurent beautifully crafted - they don't make 'em like this any more!  They are the perfect addition to something you already have.  They are the secret weapon of a stylish wardrobe.  You can wear them at the waist or on the hips and they will fit a variety of sizes!  We love that!  Except for the last belt which is quite small (unless you are small then ) and is meant to be worn at the waist.
