Jean-Louis Scherrer 1935-2013

The French couturier, Jean-Louis Scherrer passsed away on Wednesday at his home in Paris.  Since I opened RARE vintage in 2006, I have been very fortunate to have had some wonderful Scherrer pieces for the store.  I don't think there is necessairly a recognizable Scherrer look but rather that the designs are united in their refinement and distinctive very French elegance.

They have also had some good vintage moments on the red carpet. Two of my favorites:

Anne Hathaway in a black tulle Jean-Louis Scherrer cocktail dress from RARE vintage with white roses layered under the tulle.

and then Rachel Weisz looking chic and dangerous in a leopard print Scherrer dress from RARE vintage.

Best Dressed at the 2013 Golden Globes

My vote for best dressed at the Golden Globes is...

No, not whats her face, but Daniel Craig.  I know the sunglasses were controversial but its the Golden Globes, people drink while accepting awards, its more fun then the Academy Awards so why not sunglasses on the red carpet?  I love the LV suit: simple, clean, perfect.  Perfect pocket square - because it was not too perfect.

And he is a gentleman too:

And actually I did love Rachel Weisz's daring and sweet at the same time Louis Vuitton dress and of course that amazing Bulgari diamond snake bracelet.  Although the only accessory she really needed was her date : )

But all of the nude dresses, the dreaded mermaid gowns - it was more of a let down then a dreamy escape into a lala land of glamour and gorgeousness.  I applaud Lucy Liu for throwing caution to the wind and tearing down some heavy silk, floral curtains from Carolina Herrera's country house and turning them into a big ol' floral ball gown that would have done Miss Scarlett O'Hara proud.  I personally did not love it but at least it was unexpected and she obviously decided, to hell with the criticism, she was was going to wear what she damn well felt like wearing.  And I found that rather refreshing.

The only real stand outs for me were Julanne Moore looking like a movie star in black and white Tom Ford with another Bulgari snake bracelet

Kerry Washington in a nude but unusual Miu Miu dress.  Really pretty. Really glamorous.  Really youthful.

Marion Cotillard was super chic in neon orange velvet Raf Simons for Dior haute couture

and Nicole Kidman in Alexander McQueen

and last but not least, thank God for Helena Bonham Carter

RARE vintage Turns 5 Years Old!!

I can't believe that it has been five years since RARE vintage first opened its doors at 24 West 57th Street in the New York Gallery Building stocked with vintage pieces from Alaia, Balmain, Chanel, Dior,  Geoffrey Beene, Halston, Issey Miyake, Gres, Karl Lagerfeld (for Chloe and for Chanel),  Missoni and so on and so on  to Yves Saint Laurent and Zandra Rhodes!  Vintage from A to Z.

New York is a fashion capital and I wanted to open an extraordinary shop dedicated to the best in vintage fashion.  Haute Couture and ready to wear as well as the occasional anonymous fun vintage piece.

It is amazing to realize that my little store in just five years has been featured in Harper's Bazaar, Vogue.com, Elle, Avenue, WWD, the Wall Street Journal, In Style, People and many more publications.  It is also amazing to realize that we have dressed some of the most brilliant, talented and beautiful actresses and musicians: Angelina Jolie,  Julia Roberts, Reese Witherspoon, Anne Hathaway, Rachel Weisz, Lady Gaga...

It has been a labor of love and I have loved almost every day of it.  I have found some incredible beauties for the store and I have met some really wonderful and amazing people.  Thank you everyone for five amazing years!  And counting...

Thrice as Nice!

Tomorrow we will start posting some amazing new pieces but tonight we would like to share with you another image of Rachel Weisz from The Toronto Film Festival in a 1980s Thierry Mugler strapless jumpsuit with patent leather belt. Unfortunately, in this photo we only see the top but it is incredibly sexy! No one cuts a jumpsuit to mold to a woman's body like Thierry Mugler.

Twice as Nice: Rachel Weisz in RARE vintage.

RARE vintage has had three dresses on two amazing actresses at The Toronto Film Festival. Anne Hathaway wore Jean-Louis Scherrer couture and Rachel Weisz also wore Jean-Louis Scherrer couture but instead of black tulle it was lady-like silk leopard. Last night for the premiere of The Brothers Bloom she wore a pale powder blue Herve Leger couture bandage dress.
