Fashion Will You Still Love Me, Will You Still Need Me When I'm 80? The Joan Didion Edition

The face of the Céline's Spring 2015 ad campaign?  80 year old Joan Didion!  Photographed by Jurgen Teller and looking super chic in oversize black sunglasses, a black knitted top and what looks like a flattened Swiss cowbell.

It is lovely and inspiring to see a woman of 80 years being celebrated by one of the most talented fashion designers working today.

And Céline resort 2015 also seems like it was inspired by Joan Didion circa 1968 in LA with her Corvette Stingray in a long knit dress...

and on Instagram the fabulously fashionable Giovanna Battaglia wore her Céline resort dress not in front of a Corvette but on a boat...

and now since I am in California, I think I will go cozy up in a long Céline dress and read Slouching Towards Bethlehem...

Fashion Will You Still Love Me, Will You Still Need Me When I'm 93? The Iris Apfel Edition

The models just keep getting younger and younger, oops I mean older and older, these days.

The latest ad campaign for & Other Stories, the sister brand to H & M, features not Gisele Bundchen or Daria Werbowy but nonagenarian all around fabulous wears so many necklaces I am surprised she does not topple over because I think I would, Iris Apfel.

The photographs were taken in Iris Apfel's apartment by Ari Seth Cohen.

I love the beaded dress for 145 pounds (!) and look at Iris rocking the silver embossed knuckle rings!  And the gloves are pretty great too for 55 pounds.  & Other Stories will be opening in New York on Broadway.

xo and see you at & Other Stories, Juliana

Fashion Will You Still Love Me, Will You Still Need Me When I'm 60: The Ellen Barkin Edition

"When people say, "you look great for your age.  I can't believe your 60!"  I'm like what about just, "you look great."
Ellen Barkin

Which is so true.  Why define beauty by age?  I am sure it is meant as a compliment but it is also a quantified beauty.  Sort of a, I know you are 60, but despite being 60, you still look amazing!  And so as I grow older, I don't want to hear, I thought you were so much younger, which I actually hear fairly often, I just want to hear, you look great!

Ellen Barkin was interviewed for Violet Grey by Carole Radziwill and for the accompanying photos taken at the Carlyle Hotel, she asked that her photographs not be retouched and she even chopped off her hair into a Jean Seberg pixie-cut because she was tired of seeing older actresses hiding their faces behind hair.

Ellen Barkin gives a lesson.  One being wash your face every night!

Fashion Will You Still Love Me, Will You Still Need Me When I'm...

For the latest in my series, Fashion Will You Still Love Me, Will You Still Need Me When I'm une femme d'un certain age, is this FABULOUS woman from The Sartorialist.  She is wearing a F/W 2013 Prada gingham coat with chinchilla muff cuffs and what looks like a scarf she tied and knotted herself (and which I am promptly going to try myself : ).  I love the whole look, the sunglasses, the earrings and that she is very trendy but also timeless... and isn't she not only super chic and stylish but beautiful?!  So much more so then someone pulled and plumped.

Fashion Will You Still Love Me, Will You Still Need Me When I'm 65? Part #8

I love The Row.  I never would have guessed, when I first heard that the Olsen sisters were designing a fashion collection, that I would want to wear it, would really love it and that the label would even last.  But it is the quiet elegance, the quiet wearability of their clothing that makes it a keeper.  It is not inexpensive so I try to load up on their tees and tanks when they go on sale.  The pants are just perfect... whether it is the leather leggings or my other favorite, the cropped stretch pant, that just slips on with a little flair.  So modern Jackie.  Great with a loafer, a short boot, a little sandal...

But it not just the modern simplicity and wearability of their clothing that makes Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen so brilliant but the casting of their most recent pre-fall collection that is notably remarkable for two young women 27 years old.

The Olsens cast Linda Rodin.  65 years old.  Ex model.  Creator of Olio Lusso (which I also love)!

Fashion Will You Still Love Me, Will You Still Need Me When I'm 85? Part #7

"I think if you're 85 and still working, you become interesting." Betty Halbreich

Betty Halbreich is a Manhattan legend and for the past thirty-six years has been THE personal shopper at the luxury oasis, Bergdorf Goodman.  The New York Times recently profiled Mrs. Halbreich in her Park Avenue apartment where she has lived since 1947 and the rent for an eight-room apartment was $220 a month.

She greeted the Times journalist, Dan Shaw, in a Marni dress and gave him a tour of her life in her apartment.  I love that the apartment is a little bit - or perhaps more then a little bit - of a time capsule to a bygone era - when women were the keeper of the home and devoted to lifestyle.  But of course what is so interesting is that Halbreich is a working woman.

Her clients at Bergdorfs include Sarah Jessica Parker and Meryl Streep.  Patricia Fields has called her a fellow stylist.

Betty Halbreich in her blue dining room:

A cupboard of pressed linens:

A drawer of jewelry:

"Everybody goes mad for these shoe closets that are built into the back of a door" BH

A butler's pantry:

I love this spot in her house - a bar is so old school and most couples from my grandparents generation had a similar small bar somewhere in their home.

"This is my favorite spot in the house.  I keep my vodka in the refrigerator with spearmint in it in case you are really interested." BH

Betty-isms:

"The one thing I pride myself on, is knowing your size the minute you walk in. It's like a man sizing up a beautiful woman."

"I believe in longevity in dressing.  I like to treat clothes like paintings.  As they grow older, sometimes they get better."

"I never wore what anyone else wore as a little girl."

and from Isaac Mizrahi:

"Behind every successful man is a woman and behind every successful woman is Betty Halbreich.

Fashion Will You Still Love Me, Will You Still need Me When I'm 82? Part 6.

Fashion models just keep getting younger older.  For Lanvin's fall 2012 ad campaign, the brilliant Alber Elbaz chose 'real people'.  Real people like Jacquie "Tajah" Murdock a former Apollo dancer and soon to be 82 fabulous years old.  Yes, that is right, 82 years old!

Jacquie and the Lanvin peplum.

On the site Fashionista, Jacquie recounts how she came to wear the green Lanvin dress.

"Well at first they brought a short dress with a great big white bow.  I looked at it and thought it would have been more appropriate for a younger woman.  The two ladies who were helping me said, "this is too small.  We can't pull up the zipper."  It must have been a size zero and I was so happy.

Then they brought me (the green dress) and it was just me.  It had a neck.  The green long sleeves, skirt below the knee, with a peplum in front.  (Fashion Lesson Number 1: Know yourself.  Fashion Lesson Number 2: Be true to yourself.  Fashion Lesson Number 3: Wear what works for you.)

My mother sent me a Singer sewing machine when I was 9 or 10 and I made my first dress at 10.  But then when I was 13, she had material from Haiti, a white eyelet, and my mother had a dressmaker make a two piece.  The top part had a sweetheart neckline with lace and in the back was a peplum!  My mother use to starch and iron it and it would shoot out.  I thought I was the cat's meow."

Jacquie in the Lanvin peplum dress in the Fall 2012 ad campaign:

And what do we say to fashion when we sometimes wonder if it will still love us, will it still need us when we're 82?

We will still be the cat's meow.  (sound of purring...)

Mick Jagger is freakin' 69 years old and looks amazing!  Just another answer to the question: Fashion, will you still love me, will you still me when I'm 69 years old...?!  Hello darlin'! The answer is YES!

Is that a gold L'Wren Scott jacket Mick Jagger was wearing on Saturday Night Live?  Not sure - does anyone know?

Mick Jagger answers questions about Mick Jagger on Saturday Night Live...

Favorite Rolling Stone: Mick Jagger (duh?!  Hello!  Who did you think he was going to say?  Keith?!)

Favorite New Group: Foo Fighters (Got Moves Like Jagger)  and Mick really has the moves.

About Mitt Romney:

Mitt Romney is a hard working man you shouldn't let him cut your hair.  (and how cool is Mick Jagger's haircut?!)
