Revenge is a Dish Best Tasted Cold

Well, I am not sure if it is revenge exactly but it is ironic that the most influential collection by Frida Giannini for Gucci was also her last.  It certainly has defined Spring's 70s vibe with suede jackets, denim skirts, Sgt Pepper jackets, sailor pants and retro 70s bags...

Gucci Glamour

"Gucci, Gucci, Gucci"
Madonna

Setting: The 1990s

The place to be: Any Gucci Boutique

What to wear: Gucci, Gucci, Gucci...

1990s Tom Ford for Gucci.  Everyone was giddy, crazy and obsessed with Tom Ford for Gucci.  I HAD TO HAVE the slinky snakeprint dress with the then crazy expensive $2000 plus pink Swarovski crystal shoes - and have them I do.  Patience is a virtue.  I eventually bought the shoes for $250 and the dress for $99 at the Gucci outlet : )

Those wild and crazy early years of Tom Ford at Gucci were glamorous and happy.  It wasn't intellectual.  It was just clothes that were exciting and made you excited to shop.  It was a mood: you could hear clinks of ice in a cocktail or "Racquel Welch, circa 1968, beating eggs, making your breakfast" (how Amy M. Spindler drescribed the Gucci 1995 Fall collection).

So I am thrilled to have these swirly, heavily beaded, super glamorous Tom Ford for Gucci low slung beaded pants at RARE vintage and they look amazing!

This One is for Yves Saint Laurent

Natasha Poly walked the red carpet at Cannes in an emerald green Gucci gown with long sleeves (I still get goose bumps when I see girls in long sleeves - anything other then a mermaid gown and anything with a sleeve, my heart goes all aflutter!).

Now call me crazy but I think I have seen this dress somewhere before and I do not mean the Gucci store on 5th Avenue.  Just off of 5th Avenue in The New York Gallery building, inside RARE vintage, we had two Saint Laurent dresses.  One in black.  One in red.  They both wrapped and showed a slinky amount of leg that would do Angelina Jolie proud.

The black has sold but we do still have the red.

Need for Speed!

I am feeling very Italian futurist at the moment!

Velocita d'automobile by Giacomo Balla

First the fabulous Fiat 500 Gucci edition

And now my brand spanking new Prada va-va-voom shoes - next to my husband's racing helmet!

Che Bambola!

Did I need a Chanel eye lash curler?

No.

Do I need a Fiat 500 Gucci edition?

No.

But do I want one?

YES!  (and that is all that really matters isn't it :)  And you will too after seeing the brilliant little film below!

The 1960s Gucci Bag

I don't know about you but I change my bags often.  I kind of have a dream that I can buy one bag and it will go with everything but it never happens.  It is either too big, not big enough, the wrong color, the wrong shape... this is one of the reasons why I can find myself without my wallet or a favorite lipstick - it gets left in an old bag.  My heroine is a woman I know who keeps everything inside her purse in small colorful Prada nylon bags.  So when she changes her bag it is very tidy and she has everything.  That is another dream.  Someday I will be super organized...

This 1960s Gucci is not an everyday bag.  It requires a certain ensemble.  It doesn't have to be an elegant dress though it is obviously perfect for that too.  It is also perfect with what I like to call the 'Elle Macpherson taking her children to school in Notting Hill look' (bummer for all of the other Mums don't you think?)

Anyway, as I was writing, this 1960s Gucci bag is also perfect with a pair of skinny jeans, ballet flats and a tailored jacket.  Crisp and lady-like but not too lady-like.

Tom Ford: I Want Your Sex!

When I met Tom Ford recently I was seduced by his masculinity and his smoky sexiness.  I heard ice clinking in my vintage Baccarat cocktail glass, I tasted oysters on the half shell and I was dressed in a teeny tiny sheer black Gucci bra and thong adorned with tiny diamantee GGs.  Okay don't ask.  I know what you are thinking but don't ask...   Some designers make you feel at your most feminine, your most princess-y, your most cool, futuristic chic.  Tom Ford makes you feel hot and bothered. Honey, pass the ice cold martini because it's hot in here!

Whew!  Okay, I almost forgot what I was writing about.  Tom Ford for Gucci changed the way we dressed and thought about fashion.  He was and is brilliant.  A rare talent.

This is a black leather fitted dress with brilliant seaming which molds to the body from Spring 2001.  Can be worn with optional bra-like straps.  Belt fits low on the waist.  Runway collection.

Leather is deliciously soft...

Clogs: Here, There and Everywhere!

I admit that I am a little obsessed with clogs at the moment.  I love the slightly kooky ones from Louis Vuitton.

And the more basic ones from Chanel.

But the the clogs that I am most obsessed with and don't fit me (damn it!) are these original, super cool ones from Gucci with a classic silver horse bit.  They are like something straight out of your dream mother's bohemian chic 1970s wardrobe.

Gucci suede clogs.  Size (36 1/2) 6 1/2.  Condition is good but not excellent (yo dream Mamma liked them too!).  $425

Gucci for the Cold

How to look chic and glamorous and be warm and cozy at the same time?  No, we don't mean that you are getting an invitation to Valentino's house in Gstaad but we can offer you a 1980s Gucci sweater dress with an extravagantly ruffled organza collar (which you could definitely wear to Gstaad!) or you can just wear it with some lace stockings (so glad these are back in style!) and a great pair of over the knee boots (like the insanely glamorous Christian Louboutin over the knee boots with gold buttons that Carine Roitfeld wore during the recent shows)!

1980s Gucci sweater dress. Size 6/8.

Jet Set Chic

Gorgeous! Manhattan, the North Shore of Long Island and the Hamptons all enjoyed perfect summer weather this past holiday weekend. It started RARE vintage thinking about caftans and Pucci. Is any summer wardrobe complete without a little vintage Pucci and a hippie deluxe caftan?

We are definitely partial to Pucci caftans but when we found this 1973 sun kissed gold linen Gucci we could not resist. Embroidered interlocking "G"s run down the side slits, along the plunging V neckline and the sleeves. Fits a size 4 to 8.

Our first Pucci is an unusual 1970s terry zip up dress. We believe that this piece was never worn. Classic Pucci seascape colors in swirling aqua, green and deep lavender on a white background. Vintage size 12 fits a modern size 6/8.

Our next Pucci is a crisp cotton ensemble in brilliant blue, greens and purple on a white background. The cotton voile blouse and slightly A Line skirt are perfect for a Friday that starts in the city and ends in Sag Harbor. The blouse is a vintage size 14 (fits a modern size 6/8 and the skirt is a vintage size 12 (fits a modern size 6).

Gucci Girl

Gucci's heritage is legendary and was celebrated in a beautiful book, Gucci by Gucci. RARE is very excited to bring you a rare, pristine example of an iconic and recently reinterpreted 1960s web print with seashells in a breezy, sexy midriff top and flowing silk skirt. Think of Rome, Capri, Portofino, Ursula Andress and Britt Eckland and you will have an idea of the feel and look. Throw on a pair of K Jacques sandals in gold and you can have your bag packed and ready for Sardegna, the Hamptons or the South of France. Size 6.

A few days ago we mentioned the upcoming Superheroes show at the Met and we will be posting shortly more super options for the Party of the Year!
