COMME des FUCKDOWN

Madonna was recently spotted in a beanie, apres workout, that read COMME des FUCKDOWN.  I don't know if Rei Kawakubo objects as much as Hedi Slimane did to the Aint Laurent without Yves T-shirts but I really kind of like both - and I suspect Rei Kawakubo has more of a sense of humor then Mr. Slimane.

Just in at RARE vintage: Dolce & Gabbana Slashed, Graffiti and Safety Pins Jeans

Just in at RARE vintage are these slashed, graffiti covered, safety pinned and jeweled jeans.  I know.  They have everything and then some more!  In 2001, Dolce & Gabbana were busy doing the costumes for Madonna's Drowned World Tour.  And making slashed t-shirts with Britney Spears name scrolled lavishly across Madonna's bust in pink letters and another one in black with Kylie Minogue in gold.  

These jeans from the Spring/Summer 2001 are a little 60s love child mixed with some 70s punk and a good dose of 80s glamore with jeweled brooches here and there.

Obsessing on Gloves

My grandmother had a glove drawer and I realize that little girls now, most likely will not grow up with mothers or grandmothers with glove drawers.  I happen to have a drawer of vintage gloves.  I don't wear them so much but I can not part with them because they are just too beautiful.  My daughter loves to wear them for playing dress up.  And I always think that one day, I will  wear a pair.

But that has all changed!  Watching the Super Bowl I saw

and then at the amfAR Gala at Cipriani, I noticed

and I thought

that!  I am breaking the gloves out of the glove drawer!  I hope you will too!  Here are three amazing pairs of gloves that we have at RARE vintage.  The first two are by our sweetheart, Yves Saint Laurent.

5 Years 5 Gifts Vintage Contest Winner

So speaking of Madonna, I wanted to share one of the winning stories (you will have to read on to understand the Madonna connection) from one of our readers for our 5 Years 5 Gifts contest to celebrate the fifth anniversary of RARE vintage.  

I love that pieces of clothing or accessories that we buy become a part of our lives, a moment in our history and a story to remember.  My store, RARE vintage, is filled with memories and happy times.

" I own a pair of Ruby Slippers, ordered in 1996 at BARNEYS NY located in Beverly Hills which had just opened weeks before. They were for a Gala Garden Party at LOTUSLAND. These beautiful shoes are forever connected to a great Artist of our Age, Madonna. We were in the process of selling her our Wallace Neff home which I had restored lovingly in Los Feliz, 'Los Pavoreales'.

She arrived with many people for a pre-set appointment. I mentioned at the time I set the appointment that we had a trip to ready for, but that I would accommodate her request for a couple of hours for measuring and photographing. 

Time sped by when I said we must leave. She asked to stay longer alone within the home with her entourage. I said she was welcome to stay with her entourage outside for as long as they liked, as my groundskeeper was on hand, but I must get to Beverly Hills to pickup shoes that had just come in as a special order from Stephane Kelian Paris. I was to wear them the following afternoon with a 1920s embroidered lace on tulle lawn dress. She looked at me long, then turned immediately and told her realtor to hop in his Jaguar and run over to Barneys NY and pickup my shoes. Silence, and ALL eyes turned to me.

No, I replied as I needed to try them on for fit. Well, EVITA was on everyone's lips all around the

World -YOU can guess the rest..."

And Madonna Scores!

A touchdown in Givenchy!  (And so did the Giants!  Not in Givenchy of course but they scored some major touchdowns.  Sorry Gisele.)  What a performance!  What a show!  I love that the Super Bowl probably had a whole new audience tuning in last night: the fashion crowd.  Madonna sang "Vogue", "Like a Prayer", "Open Your Heart" and her new single,  "Give Me All Your Luvin".

Madona's costumes by Ricardo Tisci for Givenchy Haute Couture and stylist and costume designer, B. Akerlund were Gianni Versace/Clepoatra-esque.  I love that Tisci said in a statement, "People say everything has a limit, but limits do not exist with Madonna."

Madonna's gold cape was hand embroidered with gold metal, studs, crystals and lined in leopard print chiffon.  The mini dress was in silk cady with a leopard print cape in silk charmeuse which was also hand embroidered.  The greece inspired belt was in python with gold studs and the flaps were removable.  (Remember the boys from LMFAO ripped them off)  And she wore napa leather gloves.  I loved the boots too.

It all makes you want to rush out and go to the gym (damn Madonna looked smoking hot!), take a dance class and order a piece from the Spring 2012 Givenchy Couture collection doesn't it?!  

And PS: Don't you think Madonna has moves better then Jagger?!

The Charming Kazuko

For as long as I can recall, I remember walking into Barneys from the Madison Avenue entrance and seeing a glass display case front and center with its magical and enticing display of jewelry made from spun gold and semi precious stones and crystals.  Then one day those pieces were gone, replaced by something else and I felt some of the magic was gone.  

Kazuko, like Madonna, who wore one of her tulle crystal embroidered scarves in the video "Like a Virgin", went by one name.

Her spun gold and crystal and stone bangles, pendants and charms became the must have accessory for women like Bianca Jagger and Gloria Vanderbilt.

I am happy to be able to offer a small collection of Kazuko's jewelry at RARE vintage, not far from Barney's New York on Madison Avenue I might add.  They can be bundled together and worn as a pendant or as pins.  Kazuko believed that everything happened for a reason and so do I.  Let the magic begin again...
