Joyeux Anniversaire Yves Saint Laurent

Today would have been Yves Saint Laurent's birthday.  I don't like to think of these photos as a look back because Yves Saint Laurent is so much a part of our today and most likely, our tomorrow.  I have discovered, buying for RARE vintage, that the one designer women are most reluctant to part with, is YSL - and it is because they are still wearing it - and feel as passionate and excited by their YSL as they did all of those years ago when they first bought it...

Happy Birthday Yves Saint Laurent!

Just in: French Chic and YSL

One of my favorite new pieces for RARE vintage is a little black skirt fully scattered with black sequins  with a black silk ribbon around the waist and it is the epitome of French chic by the Master of French chic: Yves Saint Laurent.

Just in:

To wear right now: a pair of sheer black stockings and a bitchy stiletto.  Very Carine Roitfeld:

or to wear for the summer: a little tank and a flat sandal.

C'est parfait!

YSL and The Deep Blue Sea

I had no idea when I held this small striped SAINT LAURENT rive gauche box,

that when I opened it, I would be staring deep down into an undulating sea...

Video taken at the Musée Océanographique by me

Saint Laurent was inspired by the books he read, the people he met, the art he saw.  He lived in a sensory world and that world filtered through 5 avenue Marceau.

I adore this jeweled sea anemone YSL brooch which looks as beautiful as the ones in the video above that my children took this summer at the Oceanographic Museum in Monaco.

It too undulates with its articulated tentacles.  And the blue is the color of the sea...

The Beautiful Bride: Malgosia Bela in RARE vintage!

Malgoisa Bela was married to Jean-Yves Le Fur on Li Galli this past weekend in a white Azzedine Alaia dress from RARE vintage and she looked absolutely stunning!  Her wedding epitomized the glamour of barefoot and bohemian chic in a beautiful setting.  She also wore a flowing lime colored Yves Saint Laurent caftan dress the following day (also from RARE vintage : ) with natural barely there makeup and her hair in soft waves.  So gorgeous!  Congratulations Malgosia!

Like a Bat Out of London

One of my favorite new finds for RARE vintage...

For Halloween and beyond: a black 1970s suede ensemble from London with an eerily beautiful bead embroidered 'bat' on the back of the top.  The bat has tiny red bead eyes.  Pretty bat-fabulous isn't it?!

My Love Affair with Vivienne Westwood

Didn't you know?  I have had a not so secret love affair with Vivienne Westwood.  I am trying to remember when it all began.  I think it all began with a bit of SEX*.  It was casual SEX with a rock star.  I can't even remember if it was Adam Ant or one of the Sex Pistols.

Adam Ant in Vivienne Westwood.

Or maybe it was when Vivienne was awarded with an OBE by Her Royal Majesty the Queen of England and the newly named Dame Viv did a twirl and showed her little girl to the whole world that I felt a pulse of excitement.  (This is the G rated version of the knickerless twirl).

Or maybe it was when I saw one of her enormous ball gowns in 2006 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in the Costume Institute's exhibit, Anglomania, that I swooned with lust:

Or then again maybe it was Kate Moss and some swashbuckling pirate action that got me all excited and determined to get a little pirate booty for myself.

Oh, and I almost forgot, for RARE vintage.  So, you see, my love affair with Vivienne Westwood was not just some one night stand but an epic romance.

Here are some amazing pieces of Vivienne Westwood that we have in store for you right now at RARE vintage:

*and by the way, SEX was the name of the shop run by Macolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood on Kings Road in 1974.  And just what kind of SEX were you thinking of??

Coachella 2012 Style

One of my favorite things in buying for RARE vintage is that my store can go from an exceptional 1954 Christian Dior ball gown worn by an Academy Award winning actress to the Oscars to a fun little vintage romper (Size 4) that would be super cool and chic to wear to this weekends Coachella festival in Indio, California.

Here are some pics from last weekends festival:
