Pour le cocktail: Yves Saint Laurent for Christian Dior 1959

In 1958 a fragile yet ferociously talented Yves Saint Laurent took over design for the house of Christian Dior.  He was only there for six seasons but during that time, at the age of 21, he became a great couturier like his master, Christian Dior.

L'Eléphant Blanc from the Metropolitan Museum of Art

In his very first collection, he boldy did away with the waist and the New Look and created the trapeze line.  I have seen this dress, L'Eléphant Blanc, up close and it is extraordinary!  In the awed silence of looking at it the only sound was my heart pounding.  It is so beautiful, such a work of art that there are really no words to describe seeing such a creation because it is all emotion.

While we do not have the L'Eléphant Blanc, we do have a sumptuous silk cocktail dress in a brilliant shade of midnight blue from 1959 by Yves Saint Laurent.  It has a fitted bodice and a soft, full skirt.  It was most likely worn with a petticoat underneath which we do not have.  As with so much of Yves Saint Laurent, it looks incredibly fresh, modern and wearable.  I think every girl and woman dreams of owning a 1950s Yves Saint Laurent for Dior and here is the perfect chance to make that dream a reality!
