The Wolf of Wall Street Costume Update

If you saw my recent post on the costumes for the film, The Wolf of Wall Street, you will have seen the vintage teal Herve Leger dress  (yes, the 1990s are vintage) worn by Margot Robbie when her character, Nadine, meets Jordan Belfort for the first time.

Well, I said it looked very similar to an Herve Leger dress we have at RARE vintage - but catching up on The Daily Mail today (guilty pleasure : ) the real life boyfriend of the real life Nadine was whining about Martin Scorcese not showing him driving up in his red Ferrari Testarosa with Nadine.  Boo hoo.

What we do care about is, not the ex-boyfriend having his 15 seconds of fame, but the dress Nadine was wearing - which is, in fact, our dress - only ours is in black:

The 1990s as seen in The Wolf of Wall Street

There has been a big to do about how Martin Scorcese's Wolf of Wall Street is the first 'period' film of the 1990s.  It does not seem that long ago but when you go back and look at photos from the early 90s, you realize with a bit of a jolt, Damn!  It/We all looked so different. Supermodels with big hair, big thighs*, lots of make up, sheer stockings with close toed shoes, big jewelry, lots of gold.  A whole lot of glamore!

Gianni Versace ad campaign. 1990s.

Sandy Powell, the brilliant costume designer of The Wolf of Wall Street and who will surely win an Academy Award for this film, nailed the costumes for the men and women.  Armani big shouldered pin-striped suits, black leather jackets with those big sloping shoulder pads.  And poor Jonah Hill had to suffer  stone washed jeans, pastel colored button down shirts and sweaters tied 90s wasp style over his shoulders.

Unfortunately, I could not find many photos of Margot Robbie as the wife of Leonardo di Caprio's character Jordan Belfort.

But she wore an exuberantly beaded Versace from 1991:

and there is no photo that I could find but Robbie walks in on a gay orgy in full swing wearing a head to toe Gianni Versace 1992 bondage ensemble.  You know the collection: straps, golden Medusa.  The total look.  Very fierce.  Over the top.  Perfect for her character.

Something like this:

and then of course, you can not have the 1990s without some body conscious Herve Leger bandage dresses like the one Robbie wore in the film (do you see the gold on her sunglasses - so 90s!  A nice touch):

Looks similar to this one we have at RARE vintage - and Hello!  Herve Leger was made in Paris back in the day:

1990s Herve Leger from RARE vintage

and Alaia too:

and towards the end of the film, she was wearing 1995 Tom Ford for Gucci, a lime silk blouse- no photos here either but it was this one in the runway photo below:

It is a great entertaining film and Margot Robbie, beautiful and stunning, was perfectly cast and wore the 90s wardrobe well - and that Long Island accent!

*And just so you know, I am not criticizing the 'big thighs' of the 1990s Supermodels - I am only noting the enormous difference in models bodies then versus the extremely thin models now.

Personal Best

The photos of this 1990s Herve Leger dress say it all. It is drop dead sexy and requires a drop dead sexy body. Sorry! Many Herve Leger dresses mold you into a perfect shape but this one demands perfection. But we love our Leger whether they are demanding or forgiving just as long as they show you at your best.

Chocolate Love in Herve Leger

The early 1990s were defined by women like Elle Macpherson ‘The Body’, Stephanie Seymour and Cindy Crawford. They were Glamazons. Not little wisps who look like they might be swept away in a strong breeze. And what did these glamazons wear? They wore dresses by Azzedine Alaia, Thierry Mugler and Gianni Versace that celebrated a woman’s body. They also wore Herve Leger. His beautifully tailored bandage dresses may have appeared to be all about sex but they were really about cutting, craft and material. They held, pushed and defined the body, making it better, making it sexier. They also made women feel good. In Herve Leger you did not hide, you went boldly into the night. Leger left his label in 1999 and although the line continues in a similar design sensibility, there is little comparison with the fabric and fit of a true Herve Leger designed dress.

This early 1990s chocolate brown Herve Leger is a couture bandage dress. Each strip is hand sewn. You will be the sexiest girl in the room and if you do not believe us, just zip yourself in and watch the reaction when you walk into a party!

And they are still inspiring designers. Just look at the Spring/Summer collections from Thakoon, Narcisco Rodriguez and the list goes on.

The New Black: Black and White

A softer side of Herve Leger?  This early 1990s dress, slightly off the shoulders is gorgeously graphic but softly romantic too with its squiggle pattern.  Perfect for late summer or deliciously delightful during the winter with black tights and booties.

How to Reinvent a Classic

The house of Hervé Leger was founded in 1985. Max Azria acquired the label in 1998. But we love the classic vintage pieces that are made in France. The new dresses are now made in Hong Kong and the fabric is just not the same. Hervé Leger from the 1990s really molds and holds the body. So, how do you reinvent a classic? Just wear it in a fresh modern way! How about with flat gladiator sandals or a great studded sandal from the Gucci fall 2008 collection?

Sweet and Sexy

Our collection of Herve Leger continues and we are not even close to the end!

Here is an unusual Leger dress. Inspired by tennis wear, this dress has a flirty, pleated skirt. We have been writing about how much the cut of Herve Leger has to do with the fit. Look at the waist detail in this dress. Brilliant! Even if you do not have a small waist, this dress will absolutely define one for you. The beautiful, rich navy color is a great option for day and evening dressing as well.

It is sweet and sexy for the day with flats. Sweet and sexier in the evening with strappy sandals.

The Illusionist

Herve Leger's dresses create the perfect silhouette. They hold you here, push you up there, make your waist smaller and define the bum. The incredible thing about Herve Leger is that even if you do not have the perfect body, the dress will give you the body of your dreams.

The mischievous notion of transparency is a recurring theme in many designer's work. (Look at the gorgeous dresses in John Galliano's recent couture collection for Christian Dior) This black Herve Leger gown has a very beautiful pinkish nude trompe l'oeil lace effect and a slightly transparent fabric attached to the hem. Guaranteed to make you look good and feel good.

I Want Candy

We think that the lyrics to this 1982 Bow Wow Wow song perfectly describe this Herve Leger dress:

I know a girl who's tough but sweet
She's so fine, she can't be beat
She's got everything that I desire
Sets the summer sun on fire.
