Spring Haute Couture 2015: Day Three

The couture continues...

Elie Saab

Truthfully, I have never been much of an Elie Saab fan.  When I think of his dresses, I think of Halle Berry and I have never been crazy for her red carpet looks - kind of bombshell but kind of boring.  But there were two feathery looks that I thought were very pretty and would love to see hanging in my closet...

I love this because it is evening gown meets Joan Collins feather trimmed peignoir in a pale nudish gold:

and this dress has a very Claudia Cardinale 60s vibe - love with the flat sandal:

Jean Paul Gaultier

It was all classic Gaultier, nothing groundbreakingly new but well done and I loved that there was a variety of models on the runway because people, women of all sizes and ages love fashion!

This was probably my favorite look. Very finely pleated, lightly exposed corseting underneath and then exposed boning of a very beautiful crinoline ending in fringe:

Valentino:

What can I say?  Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli have been knocking it out of the park every collection they have shown for Valentino.  They are not just good, they are great.  My favorite looks:

Oh, to be a peasant (a rich one)

Oh, to be a wench with golden wings on your feet

Oh, to be in clouds of couture

Oh, what Sargent would paint Madame X in today

RARE vintage in Departures September Issue!

Our friend and the very talented stylist, Amanda Ross, channeled the most fabulous and also very talented Millicent Rogers in Taos for the September issue of Departures magazine.  Millicent style in Taos was all about turquoise jewelry, Navajo  skirts, and her hair tied with a bandana.

"It seems to me strange sometines that I've only been in Taos fifteen months for I feel so much of it.  As if my people had been buried in its graveyards and my blood ties were in its earth.  I feel so drawn to return when I'm away and so restless with the rest of the world because of it." Millicent Rogers

MTV House of Style: The Cindy Crawford Years

MTV has recently released a sort of greatest hits of House of Style hosted by Cindy Crawford.  They are a treasure trove of vintage 1990s fashion and culture.

Here are a few of my favorites:

MTV's House of Style Season 1.  Episode 10: Helmut Newton and Cindy Crawford in Monte Carlo.

Some great quotes in this one.  "This is an old classical image of blindfolded orchestra which use to play in a room separee and elegant people use to have private elegant orgies." Helmut Newton

Great Jean Paul Gaultier video with some iconic pieces like the cone dress.  Episode 2.

Some really AMAZING Gianni Versace fashion in Episode.  "Versace has his feet firmly planted in traditionalism but every now and then he brings about an air of theatricality so if you feel like being a bit bold, his clothes bridge that gap."  Sylvester Stallone.  (I know!  Too, too funny!)

The fabulous Linda Evangelista being, well, fabulous...  Episode 12.

Veronica Webb on some of the biggest bad asses in French fashion.  Karl looking very different.  And Naomi on how hard it is being a Supermodel, "You work until 2AM, then you have to get up at 7AM to go to work again.  And you have to look good." Episode 12.

Girl talk with Naomi, Linda and Kristen McMenamy.  Look at how high those thongs and jeans are!  And, who knew, Naomi loves flea market shopping!  And has "zits"!  Episode 18.

When Adam and Eve met Jean Paul Gaultier

I am sure you know Jean Paul Gaultier is having a much deserved major fashion moment right now: First there was The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.  And then the show The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk opened at the de Young Museum in San Francisco.  And then in a major pop cultural art moment he designed Diet Coke bottles.

In Spring Summer 1991 Gaultier wanted to shake up the garden of Adam and Eve.  He reimagined them as modern day Rastafarians.  He wanted to reassemble men and women, masculine and feminine together.  This rare and beautiful midnight blue silk jacket is from that 1991 collection.  The front is cut out and completely wired with appliqués of pleated leaves.  The jacket nips in at the waist and the hips are curvaceous and reminiscent of Christian Dior's iconic "Bar' suit.

I am feeling much like Eve... very, very tempted!

Baby, It's #%@$ Cold Outside!

It's not just cold here in New York, it's #%@! cold here in New York!  Like it is too cold to shop the sales, to cold to go see a client with a collection of Madame Gres dresses from the 1950s and 1960s - ha!  it could never be that cold!!  Got Gres at the North Pole?  I'm there!  Next flight!

But because we can't just stay home and snuggle with someone we love: husbands, boyfriends, girlfriends, dogs, cats - I don't know are cats snuggly?  We have to go and face the cold and we want to do it looking fabulous!  So today we have our RARE vintage boyfriend to cuddle up to: Jean Paul Gaultier.  A Jean Paul Gaultier circa early 1990s sweater with a rolled and padded collar and cuffs and scattered sequin embroidery throughout.   Cozy Chic!

Indian Summer

Merde.  Paris Fashion Week had an unseasonal bout of super hot weather and everyone who had packed their brand spanking new fall clothes, had nothing to wear!  But looking at the photos from Tommy Ton and Philo Oh, I think the stories of having nothing to wear are maybe a little exaggerated - but of course, I know the feeling well even though any such statements from me guarantee a roll of the eyes from my husband.  The funniest thing was when our daughter was getting dressed recently to go out, she actually said she had nothing to wear!  She is 8!  I swear she did not hear it from me:)

So what do you wear when Indian Summer hits PFW?  Color and lots of it:

You also wear Native American inspired pieces:

This heavy silver necklace is very Millicent Rogers in Taos don't you think?

Photos from Tommy Ton and Phil Oh

So you might consider wearing this incredible beaded kilt from Jean Paul Gaultier.  A very international mix: Native American, Scottish and a Frenchman.  Designed by Gaultier during his strongest years, the mid 1990s, it is a runway piece beautifully done with lots of movement from the beaded fringe.
