The Dark Side of the Moon: Christian Dior Haute Couture

It looks like the dark side of the moon for Christian Dior without the troubled genius of John Galliano.

John Galliano's longtime assistant Bill Gaytten took over the design for Dior for the Fall 2011 collection.  I have heard the reference was architectural shapes but some of the gowns looked like the models had been dipped in glue and a strong wind blew every single piece of Ladurée colored silk in Paris onto the gowns.  The pressure must have been incredible on Mr. Gaytten and perhaps the pressure to perform with all the world watching was too much.

As an owner of a vintage store, I always see buying, not just for the store, but also for myself through somewhat strict eyes: if it is expensive, is it a keeper?  Is it a good investment, will I want to give it to my daughter, go through the work and time of caring for it?  A few of the caftan dresses were pretty and showed potential but I am not certain I saw any collector pieces here.

Dior has only had five designers: Christian Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, Marc Bohan, Gianfranco Ferre and John Galliano.  And those Roger Vivier for Christian Dior shoes may be small but they are mighty.  It has to be someone with the talent of a Marc Jacobs (or a Giambattista Valli) to bring a strong vision to the couture, ready-to-wear and accessories.   Sidney Toledano and Bernard Arnault need a rare talent to bring something fresh to the venerable house of Dior.  Not costumes for the opera Pagliacci.

The Name Dropper

I am going to be a total name dropper.  These are the names that I will drop into your holiday weekend to tantalize you with.   And while you are eating your lobsters or burgers on the beach, you can be thinking about just what might be attached to those names...

Happy Fourth of July everyone!  RARE vintage will be back on Tuesday the 6th!

Christian Dior haute couture, Yves Saint Laurent, Gianni Versace couture, Atelier Gianni Versace,  (okay so here I will drop a word, Oroton - if you don't know what it means, look it up and then you will know what I mean and just how good that word means!!  What is the plural of Oroton?   Orotons?   Hmmm...) Gianfranco Ferre, Valentino haute couture and Chanel...

The Dream Gown

A few years ago we saw Natalia Vodianova at a party in New York wearing a very voluminous dress. It was yards and yards of fabric that cascaded away from her body. Although there was nothing form fitting, you could see hints of her body through the filmy fabric and it was extremely sexy.

In the late 1970s French designers and magazines embraced a glamorous bohemian type of dressing. Part ethnic chic, part languor and part soft dreamy gowns look really good with my enormous structured hair.

This unlabeled haute couture dress, which is attributed to Christian Dior, is a dream gown. The pale dotted chiffon has gently twisted shoulder straps with flowing scarves that float away from the shoulders. The back dips down erotically. It is also weighted so that it hangs beautifully. You may not want to do a literal version of the 1970s giant up-do but we do think that having your hair up is a must so you see that deep dip on the upper back of the dress. And if you can arrange for a soft summer breeze so that the chiffon floats around your body and there is the light of a full moon to capture the soft lumious color of the dress all the better! What is fashion after all without a little fantasy...

The Gold And The Beautiful

Just in time for the holidays we are posting a crazy, sexy, beautiful Christian Dior Haute Couture cocktail dress from the 1980s. Designed for the house by Gianfranco Ferre it is made of an extraordinary gold lace with layers of apricot and gold chiffon underneath. It is heavily embroidered with beads, sequins and metal gold thread - all that you need to make you feel like Marie Antoinette in a mini with an appropriately deep decolleté. So, you can have your cake and eat it too! Size 4 (with a larger bosom)
