If I Was the Postmaster General...

In England they are celebrating English fashion design with a new stamp collection.  There are ten: Alexander McQueen, Jean Muir, Vivienne Westwood, Ossie Clark, Granny Takes a Trip, Hardie Amies, Norman Hartmell, Paul Smith, Tommy Nutter and Zandra Rhodes.  Stamps?!  You might be thinking?  BORING!  But actually they are super cool and super chic.  Stunningly shot by the photographer Solve Sundsbo.

I was thinking if I was the Postmaster General which American designers would I choose for a stamp collection?  Halston, Claire McCardell, Mainbocher, Adrian, Geoffrey Beene... hard to choose.  Marc Jacobs?  Norma Kamali?  Who would you choose?

This is actually one of my favorites of the English designers.  I am all about the turban and the slinky/floaty dress in a rust color right now.

Palest Pink Ossie Clark Dress

Sometimes when we see an Ossie Clark dress we immediately imagine a field of wildfowers and a girl laughing in a hazy sunlight. The girl is free-spirited, romantic, independent, artistic. She listens to Beth Ditto, Glen Gould's Goldberg Variations and The Rolling Stones. She reads Marguerite Duras, Tolstoy and Hemingway. She wears Ossie Clark because his clothes are designed as if for her. They go on as easily as they come off and they are as delicate and romantic as she is. A palest pink wrap dress in moss crepe with a plunging neckline edged in pale pink satin and trumpet sleeves hangs in her cupboard and is her favorite vintage dress.

1970s Ossie Clark for radley pale pink wrap dress. Size 2/4.

Julia Roberts in Allure

RARE vintage has admired Julia Robert's work since we first saw her in Mystic Pizza and we are definitely looking forward to seeing her new film with Clive Owen, Duplicity.

March is the time for the big spring fashion issues to come out and RARE vintage is very excited to have had our Donald Brooks dress with Sarah Jessica Parker in Harper's Bazaar and our 1970s Ossie Clark dress on Julia Roberts in the new issue of Allure. The Michael Thompson photograph is also really beautiful. And if you are going to vacuum, it might as well be in Ossie Clark!

To The Moon Ossie

This is our absolute favorite gown at the moment. It is heavenly and hip. It is a great wrap dress by Ossie Clark with embroidered moons and stars running along the neckline. It is Ossie Clark for Radley but we don't care! It is so wonderful! We usually try to buy only Ossie Clark's own label but a great dress is a great dress regardless of the label. There is a very nice detail in the art deco inspired button at the top front with a single diamante. A perfect dress with a pair of strappy sandals for dinner out or for a grander ocassion.

Did we say our favorite gown? Well, there is a new Roberto Capucci midnight blue silk satin ball gown from the early 1960s when Capucci opened a house in Paris...

Innocence

There is something about Ossie Clark that brings out a desire for glamor mixed with a craving for a pint in a girl. It is hedonism and technical ability combined in pretty, easy-to-wear pieces that have made Ossie Clark so collectible. This is 1970s Ossie Clark for Radley dress in lobster red and black moss crepe with deep decoltee and gigot sleeves. Size 4.

RARE's Most Beguiling Dress

Hello gorgeous! Here is a sexy and sweet Ossie Clark "Tarts" dress from early 1970s. The print was designed by Ossie's wife Celia Birtwell. Together they defined London fashion from the Sixties and Seventies.

Ossie Clark's 1966 graduation collection was featured in Vogue the same year that he also designed for Alice Pollack's boutique, Quorum. He also went on to design a more mass produced and a less expensive line for Radley.

This is a wrap-around dress in crepe, deep blue with little sprigs of flowers all over. The neckline plunges to a slighly raised waist and the skirt is very full with tiny pleats on either side. You will be ready for anything in this gown: it is a little rock and roll, a little elegant and a little tarty. Label reads, Ossie Clark, Celia Birtwell. Size 4/6. SOLD

Oh Ossie!

London fashion from the 1960s through the 1970s merged art, fashion, photography and music. Dressing a glittering clientale: Twiggy, Mick and Bianca Jagger, Jean Shrimpton and Penelope Tree, Ossie Clark was one of the most famous and talented designers of that time.

His tailoring was amazing and the cuts were deceptively simple. He also worked with his wife, Celia Birtwell who designed textiles that were romantic and inspired by the natural world. We will post our staggeringly beautiful Ossie Clark and Celia Birtwell print "Tarts" dress later in the week.

Feel like Talhita Getty in this lovely biscuit colored moss crepe early 1970s day dress by Ossie Clark. Size 4. SOLD
