A Fine 1960 Gattinoni Embroidered Silk Gown

We have had some pristine examples of great Italian fashion at RARE vintage: pieces by Gigliola Curiel, Roberto Capucci, Gianni Versace, Valentino and most recently an amazing collection of 1980s Dolce e Gabbana, Romeo Gigli and Byblos - not all of which we have had time to post on the blog yet so stay tuned. I love the really beautifully crafted 1950s pieces as much as the 1980s/early 1990s merry widows of Dolce e Gabbana or Gianni Versace's rock and roll girls.

If you are having an Audrey Hepburn (who wore Gattinoni) or a Grace Kelly moment, this is the perfect gown. It is from the 1960 collection where the great Italian couturiere, Fernanda Gattinoni, showed empire dresses. It is incredibly glamorous and incredibly beautiful.

The gown is magnificently embroidered. The over all embroidery is very subtle because of the light silver thread and the pale coral colors.

One of the most beautiful things about this dress - well, really, there are so many, but the back is as good as the front with its extravagant asymmetric swag. The dress is also designed like a flower with the the front continuing around to the back where it wraps around a column.

And we can't forget the diamanté embroidered straps!

1960 Silk Embroidered Gattinoni Gown. Size 4.

  1. That is a beautiful gown! Would that be a real size 4 (for skinny chicks) or a modern 4 that is big enough to swim in...? The color and the applique is divine!

  2. I would say that it is a modern size 4 that you could definitely put on and breathe comfortably! Beautiful isn't it?!!
