Queen Elizabeth I of England loved a good pearl. It seems that in all of the plentiful portraits of her - she was the first Queen to understand controlling her image and all of its PR advantages, she is almost never without a huge pearl or pearls in her hair. Pearls represented not only wealth but purity and virginity.
