If I Was the Postmaster General...

In England they are celebrating English fashion design with a new stamp collection.  There are ten: Alexander McQueen, Jean Muir, Vivienne Westwood, Ossie Clark, Granny Takes a Trip, Hardie Amies, Norman Hartmell, Paul Smith, Tommy Nutter and Zandra Rhodes.  Stamps?!  You might be thinking?  BORING!  But actually they are super cool and super chic.  Stunningly shot by the photographer Solve Sundsbo.

I was thinking if I was the Postmaster General which American designers would I choose for a stamp collection?  Halston, Claire McCardell, Mainbocher, Adrian, Geoffrey Beene... hard to choose.  Marc Jacobs?  Norma Kamali?  Who would you choose? 

This is actually one of my favorites of the English designers.  I am all about the turban and the slinky/floaty dress in a rust color right now.

Spring Fling: Jean Muir

We are having such incredible weather in New York, the long winter of tights and sweaters and coats seems months ago.  How good does it feel to escape into a thin Jean Muir jersey dress from 1970s London that is easy, looks cool and is sexy but not obvious. 

The print reminds me a bit of an Ossie Clark.

 I love the details on this dress.  The two buttons on each shoulder and how the sleeve narrows at the wrist.

Sweet Dreams

Olivier Theysens' ethereal collection for Nina Ricci Fall 2008 had an achingly beautiful quality that made us want to rummage around in some dream attic where fall leaves blow in through the open window and an old trunk opens to reveal soft, fragile dresses in tones of russet, sunset yellow and burnt orange. The perfect wardrobe of some faded, forgotten girl.

Thinking about that collection, we were instantly struck by the similar romantic feeling in these very cool dresses from Jean Muir. The deep green leather dress is from 1971 and was published in Sinty Stemp's book on Jean Muir. Size 4. The jersey dresses are from 1972. Size 6. The dove grey dress has tiny covered buttons. We also accessorized the russet dress with an incredible vintage Cerruti belt that we thought made for a darker romantic look.
